Austin got the nickname “Chumlee” at 12 after his father compared him one day to the walrus “Chumley” in the cartoon series “Tennessee Tuxedo” because of his large face and prominent chin. His one childhood best friend was Corey Harrison. 

Rick and Richard Harrison founded the Las Vegas-based Gold and Silver Pawn Shop in 1989, which is located just a few minutes off the Las Vegas strip. Chumlee was inspired to make a big change after his father’s death from pancreatic cancer at 54.

When his father died of pancreatic cancer at 54, he was encouraged to make a significant change. He exercised six days a week. He changed his diet to include more juice, veggies, and no red meat. Chumlee lost a whopping 110 pounds.

However, he regained weight, reaching up to 350 pounds. But it was decreased by 160 lbs after getting a gastric sleeve operation. In that surgery, a large piece of his stomach was apparently removed.

Chumlee’s career:

At 21, Chumlee started working at Gold and Silver Pawnshop. His responsibilities include working behind the counter, evaluating items, loading goods, and printing tickets for customer purchases. The pawnshop became popular after being featured on the Comedy Central television show named “Insomniac with Dave Attell.” After that episode, his father Rick Harrison pitched a full-fledged series to many production companies and networks. Finally, The History Channel bought it.

“Pawn Stars” debuted in the year 2009, when Austin worked there for around 5 years. Chumlee became a fan favorite on “Pawn Stars.” and a breakout cast member.

Then Chumlee began his own company by selling novelty items that he designed. Chumlee’s merchandise sales are bigger than other stars in the show. Chumlee sold his half stake in his company to Rick Harrison so that the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop could sell his novelty items more efficiently.

Later, Chumlee opened a candy shop in 2017 that is called Chumlee’s Candy on the Boulevard. This candy shop is located across the street from the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas. Chumlee’s brother Sage runs the everyday operation of this candy store.

Controversies:

In 2016, the police raided the residence and found illegal drug items. Many legally held guns including a shotgun, rifle & mp5 were found inside. The Xanx pill also contained pills containing cocaine and methamphetamine on its premises. The drugs were also found on the premises. Chumlee was arrested on bond and is charged with felony charges involving weapons or drugs.
